Promotion and Retention of Students

A fixed set of criteria will not be used to determine promotion from one grade or level to another, except at the senior high level. In general, the well being of the individual pupils and the well-being of the group will be the determining factors.

Retention shall be used sparingly. Only when it is clear that a pupil will profit from this, will he be retained. Although retention may be recommended by teachers, it will only be assigned with the approval of the superintendent following a review of the individual case. When retention of a pupil is being considered, teachers must confer with the pupil’s parents at least two weeks before the end of the school year. Adopted: February 18, 1980 Reviewed: December 2004
